Slutsak Belts - "Слуцкія паясы"
'Me fecit Sluciae', which is Latin for
'Made in Slutsak', is a sign which was branded on every Belt, damasked by
masters of the Radzivills'* Slutsak manufactory. The town of Slutsak became
famous for its manufactories of the most expensive and luxurious piece of
garment of the Litvian Szlachta*.
The Slutsak Belts are known
all over the world as the Belarusian national relic, as a symbol of the nation.
They have turned into an invaluable work of art and have raised the textile art
to the highest level.
The Slutsak Belts were a thing of status at that time and became a real symbol of the Szlachta' dignity and honour, a noble ancient origin and high social standing and prosperity of their hosts.
The famous Slutsak Belts sophisticated with golden threads motifs were only made for people of power. Sending a Slutsak Belt as say diplomatic gift to a neighboring country political mogul was customary. Some part of the historical Belts was also manufactured in Lyon, France, where the manufacturers even used to put a "Slutsk" brand on the belts.
And even peasants, who would never in their
life be able to afford silk, silver and gold woven Belts, were still wearing
pretty fancy belts on top of their simple clothes.
The Slutsak Belts were
woven from silk, golden and silver threads and were made two-sided, up to 4
meters long and 50 cm wide. Oriental patterns got floriated with traditionally dear
chamomiles, cornflowers, forget-me-nots, oak and maple leaves.
The Slutsak Belts were made
individually and never the same. No
wonder weaving of one Belt took almost a year, and its cost was equated to
jewelry.
* The Radzivills – the dynasty
of the Grand Dukes of the Grand Duchy of Litva (historical Belarus).
*Szlachta - a legally privileged noble class in GDL.
