The Straw Pavouk Talisman.

The
Straw Pavouk is one of the oldest talismans in Belarus, traditionally made from
straw and thread. It’s considered a sacred object because its geometric shape
and the process of making it are believed to echo the divine geometry of the
Universe’s creation.
According
to legends, the entire universe was woven as the greatest masterpiece of a
spider.
Families
make the Straw Pavouk at the beginning of each new year, believing it will
serve as a protector for their home and family throughout the year. It’s
thought to catch and destroy evil forces.
Typically,
it’s hung from the ceiling, or in a doorway, or above a baby’s crib.
For my third stitched Straw Pavouk, I aimed to use colours that closely resemble real straw. The design is inspired by traditional Belarusan patterns, like those found in woven coverlets.
The word ‘pavouk’ means ‘a spider’ in Belarusan language.

The Fern Flower.

Deep in the forests of Belarus lies the elusive Fern Flower, steeped in ancient magic and mystery.
According
to Belarusan folklore, the Fern-Flower blooms solely only on the shortest night of the year, the
Summer Solstice, revered as the Koupala-Night holiday in Belarusan tradition.
Throughout
the Koupala-Night festivities, people engage in various magical rituals to
honour the Union of the celestial and terrestrial realms. The night is filled
with joyous revelry, as bonfires illuminate the darkness, dancers twirl around
them, and songs of old are sung. Maidens craft garlands of wildflowers to
divine their fortunes, releasing them into the flowing waters of rivers.

Pavouk Talisman 2.

The Straw Pavouk, which translates to Straw Spider, is among of the oldest talismans in Belarus. It was traditionally hung in the most honorable place before the New Year to protect the house and the family throughout the upcoming year.
The Pavouk
is assembled from light straw tubes and looks weightless and lacy. When suspended from the ceiling, it resembles
a skillfully woven web, hence the name spider. Belarusians believed that any
evil forces, misfortunes or diseases that get tangled in the web would be taken
away by the spider, keeping peace and harmony in the family.
I designed and embroidered Pavouk that resembles the one made of straw, and I hope it can bring happiness and wellness to those who stitch it.

I am so happy to share with you this fourth installment of my Ripple On Water Series. These mesmerizing designs are based on Belarusan geometrical weaving patterns.
Such
patterns were used for making bed coverlets, wall hangings, towels and such.
The designs have a distinctive optical effect and work as mandals to refresh
and energize the observer.
Most
designs are associated with water and a spring. In turn, the spring is a symbol
of Belarus itself. Over time these waterlike designs became a brand of
Belarusian culture.

Kaliada Goat.

The piece was a part of the juried ‘Threadworks 2016’ three-year Traveling Show.
In Belarusan culture, the goat is the sacred, magical animal believed to easily make a person successful just by its presence in one’s personal space. The folklore says, "Where the goat walks, there rye grows. Where the goat horns point, there is harvest growth".
The goat is worshiped during the winter holiday season, namely the winter solstice
time, when the old year comes to an end and a new one begins.
In the Belarusan language, this
holiday is called 'Kaliady' from the word 'kola' meaning
a circle.
This is fun-filled time of the year when it’s customary for
groups of people dressed in fancy clothes to solicit food door-to-door by
singing carols, leading the magic “goat” around the master’s house for him to
have a good harvest next year.
In my version of the Kaliada Goat design, there are
several sacred Belarusan symbols connected to the winter holiday season –
- the goat itself,
- the star of Bethlehem symbolizes Jesus's Birth and Christmas,
- the geometrical sign of The Sun,
- the signs of Ancestors,
- symbols of Wealth and Well-being.
To mark the winter solstice, the sacred symbol for the
Completion of the year is embroidered on the Goat’s snout and that of the
beginning of the new year (appearing, sprouting, springing) is embroidered on
its forehead.at
At the very top is the solar sign of the Kaliada.
There are two inscriptions at both sides of the design. They are
made in Belarusan Traditional Stitching Motifs Font*, and the letters are read
from top to bottom). The inscription on the right says, “Merry Christmas!”, and
the one on the left, “Merry Kaliada!” in Belarusan.
*Belarusan Traditional Stitching Motifs Font is a stylization of the Cyrillic
and Latin alphabets based on the patterns of the Belarusan ornamental strips on
belts and towels. It has been created by Belarusan philosopher and linguist
Mihail Bayaryn.

Namitka. All Stars Are in Our Hands -
-------------------------------------
Namitka is a distinctive married woman's headdress as a part of traditional Belarusan folk dress. It is a long, long thin fabric wrapped around the head and tied in the back. The ends of the fabric are embroidered with traditional motifs in red.
Have you ever worn a
traditional costume? What feeling did you have?
When I wear it, I
can no longer stand like a weeping willow. Instead, I keep my body straight.
And especially, when you have this wrapped thing on your head – almost a crown
– you can feel just like a queen!
On the other hand…
some people of western cultures could see in this image a hint of an ‘angel’.
No, no, no, it’s not that. While designing this image I was thinking about one
famous statement in our culture: What does a bird first do just before she
takes flight? She becomes proud.
The
leftmost one is Alatyr Star symbolizing Universe. The next one is the Sun. The
next to the Sun is a Star of Yaryla
god, who is a son of the Sun. The last one is a symbol of our ancestors who
believed that they were leading their race from Yaryla.
The building behind the lady is an image of a typical Belarusan temple architecture.

Blessing - "Дабраславенне"
In my culture,
embroidery is believed to be a spiritual activity, like prying to God. From
time immemorial, Belarusan people have used the ancient symbols to embellish
customary items like a roushnik (towel) and magical powers are associated with
these embroideries creating a
talisman.
When a new
baby comes to the world, close relatives prepare a gift talisman with
a
special symbol called Khresbiny (the four-pointed rosette) meaning christening.
I placed
this symbol in the very center of the design.
As for my stylized design, I see it in it a flower representing joy and best wishes for the newborn life.
This
embroidered wall art is perfect for gifting it for a
birth, christening, birthday or any other such customs. It
can also be gifted as a token of good luck, embroidering it on many household
items like a cushion, a towel, a table
centerpiece, baby cloth etc. And feel free to use your favourite
colours too.

Herodotus Sea - "Герадотава мора"
My homeland Belarus has no sea.
Still,
I have something to say about the Belarusan sea. Scientists and historians say
that long ago, there was a vast sea in the Palessie region in the south of the
country, called the Herodotus Sea. It is named so after the ancient Greek
historian and geographer who made the first mention of the Belarusian Sea 2500
years ago.
The
Sea disappeared. Now on its place lies a country of numerous lakes, rivers and forest
swamps.
There is no sea in Belarus anymore. Though, the memory of it can be easily found in Belarusan past -- in folklore, songs and tales… and, actually, in my Nizanka embroidery series Ripples-On-Water patterns, based on traditional Belarusan weaving …and of course, in Belarusan dreams of paradise, fabulous vacationing or ultimately happy encounters manifested in thoughts about a sea, “to see the sea and die”.
