Herodotus Sea - "Герадотава мора"

My homeland Belarus has no sea.

Still, I have something to say about the Belarusan sea. Scientists and historians say that long ago, there was a vast sea in the Palessie region in the south of the country, called the Herodotus Sea. It is named so after the ancient Greek historian and geographer who made the first mention of the Belarusian Sea 2500 years ago.

The Sea disappeared. Now on its place lies a country of numerous lakes, rivers and forest swamps.

There is no sea in Belarus anymore. Though, the memory of it can be easily found in Belarusan past -- in folklore, songs and tales… and, actually, in my Nizanka embroidery series Ripples-On-Water patterns, based on traditional Belarusan weaving …and of course, in Belarusan dreams of paradise, fabulous vacationing or ultimately happy encounters manifested in thoughts about a sea, “to see the sea and die”.

У Беларусі няма мора.

І ўсё ж я маю нешта пра беларускае мора сказаць. Навукоўцы і гісторыкі сцвярджаюць, што некалі даўно на Палессі было мора, якое яны называюць Мора Герадота. Названае яно так паводле грэцкага гісторыка, які першым узгадаў пра беларускае мора 2500 гадоў таму. Але мора зьнікла. Цяпер на гэтым мейсцы ляжыць краіна незлічоных азёр, рэк і лясных балот.

У Беларусі больш няма мора.

Але памяць пра яго можна лёгка знайсці ў беларускім мінулым – у фальклёры: песнях і казках... а яшчэ, у маіх вышытых дызайнах “Кругі-на-вадзе”, заснаваных на беларускіх старажытных тканых узорах ... і вядома, у беларускіх уяўленнях аб раі, аб казачных вакацыях і, урэшце, шчаслівых сустрэчах, што ўвасабляюцца ў беларускую мару аб моры – “убачыць мора і памерці”.
